Showing up in the AI answer

When someone asks ChatGPT for "the best option in town", a few names come back. Getting your business to be one of them has a name now: Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO.

The idea, in one sentence: GEO is the practice of being named when someone asks an AI for a recommendation, and you earn it through the same fundamentals the earlier chapters built, plus being present where AI looks.

Why it matters

An AI assistant does not return a page of options to compare. It returns an answer, often with just two or three businesses named in it. Being one of those names is the entire game, the equivalent of ranking on page one, except there is no page two to fall back to. If the model is not confident enough to mention you, you simply are not part of the conversation the customer is having.

How the model decides

It is less mysterious than it sounds. A model names the businesses it can connect to the question clearly and confidently. That confidence is built from things you have already met in this book: a clear, consistent entity (it knows who you are), specificity (it knows what you are for), answer-formatted content (it has clean text to draw on), genuine citations and mentions (others vouch for you in context), and real reviews (your reputation checks out). GEO is not a separate trick bolted on top. It is what happens when the fundamentals are in place.

There is one extra ingredient: the model looks in places beyond your website. Recommendations are shaped by Reddit threads, forum discussions, review platforms and community answers. Being genuinely present in those conversations, where your customers already ask each other for advice, feeds directly into what the AI repeats back.

How to do it

Write the page that literally answers the question someone would ask an AI, "the best [what] in [where]", and answer it with specifics. Keep your entity identical everywhere so the model never doubts who you are. Build the genuine mentions and reviews from the last chapters. And show up, as a real, helpful participant, in the communities and platforms your buyers use. Each of these is a reason for the model to reach for your name.

The pitfall to avoid

Looking for a shortcut, a magic phrase or a hack that "gets you into ChatGPT". There isn't one, and chasing it wastes the effort that actually works. GEO is the compounding payoff of clarity, relevance, credibility and presence. The businesses that get named are the ones that earned it across every other chapter, not the ones that found a clever trick.
